Keynote: 5G-Era and Beyond: Small Cell Industry Perspective [slides]

Speaker: Dr. Prabhakar Chitrapu, Chair of Small Cell Forum

Abstract: The mobile ecosystem is evolving and changing in very significant and disruptive manners. This talk will provide a broad overview of these developments, highlighting the new players, new relationships, and the new technologies entering the ecosystem. The talk will start by looking at the general evolution of cellular radio technology generations from 2G to 5G, introducing the notion of cellular Generational‐Era's, which include basic technologies defined for each generation by standards organizations (such as 3GPP) as well as deployments and service offerings. It will then address various dimensions of each generational‐era, namely basic radio technologies, spectrum, radio network architecture, end‐to‐end network architecture, network implementation, and network deployers/operators. Next we will focus on the specifics of the 5G‐Era, covering 3GPP defined 5G technologies, followed by densification & small cell networks, shared spectrum solutions, edge computing, private cellular networks, neutral host solutions, and multi‐radio‐access‐technology solutions. The speaker will conclude the presentation by sharing personal views of the current status of the 5G‐Era and speculate on the potential makeup of 6G.
