Fall 2021 BWAC Semi-annual Meeting at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina, Nov. 7-9, 2021

The semiannual BWAC IAB meeting took place in a hybrid mode (in-person and virtual), Nov 8-9, 2021.  The in-person part was hosted by North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina. A reception for in-person attendees took place at the StateView Hotel on the evening of Nov. 7. A Zoom link was also sent directly to all registered participants. The BWAC meeting was followed by an AERPAW event, which happened on Nov 9-10.

Keynote 1: mmWave: Evolving Toward 5G-Advanced and Beyond

Abstract: After more than a decade of advanced R&D and ecosystem trials, commercial 5G mmWave service is now available in more than 55 U.S. cities and 160 areas in Japan. Looking forward, we expect 5G mmWave to expand into new geographic regions across the globe, and new device types and tiers will emerge to take full advantage of mmWave’s virtually unlimited capacity. On the research front, Qualcomm continues to push the technology boundaries of mmWave for 5G/6G by bringing new capabilities and enhancements. Join this seminar to:

  • Track the latest update on the global commercial rollout of 5G mmWave networks and devices
  • See our vision for 5G mmWave and the new opportunities it poises to bring for the broader ecosystem
  •  Learn about the mmWave capabilities and enhancements coming in 3GPP 5G-Advanced and beyond

Speaker: Dr. Ozge Koymen, Qualcomm Technologies

Bio: Ozge Koymen is a Senior Director of Technology at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. where he has been since 2006.  He has led the 5G millimeter-wave program within Qualcomm R&D since early 2015, from early conceptual evaluation to commercial deployment. His previous areas as a technical contributor include Wireless Backhaul, Small Cells, LTE-D, LTE, and UMB. Prior to Qualcomm, he was a member of Flarion Technologies developing a pioneering OFDMA cellular system, Flash-OFDM, during 2003-2006. His earlier work experience includes full-time and consulting work for Impinj, Inc. (2000-2003) and TRW (1996-2000). He received the B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1996 and the M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1997 and 2003, respectively.

Keynote 2: Enabling 5G Innovation Through Use Case-Driven Collaboration

Abstract: The MITRE Engenuity Open Generation 5G Consortium, a research, and development collaborative on a mission to solve complex challenges in next-generation networks through use case focused development, has been driving innovation in uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) over 5G.

Our collaborative approach includes identifying use case challenges, developing solutions to overcome them, and conducting experiments to demonstrate and validate those solutions. We aim to give back to society by providing data, shared knowledge, and experimentation opportunities.

Leveraging MITRE’s deep bench of aviation and telecommunications expertise, adjacency to US government organizations, and the tech leadership of members like Nokia, Ericsson, Verizon, and Qualcomm; Open Generation is actively working to benchmark 5G reliability and leading innovation for flights over 5G.

In this presentation, we will share our initial progress and impact by exploring the selected UAS over 5G use cases, intended to operate beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS), which benefit the most from wide-area cellular network architectures. We will explain our vision to enable high resolution, low latency benefits derived from wide-area 5G network architectures and applications using data at the network edge in an aviation context by sharing insights and experimental plans related to command and control, drone-to-drone communications, enhanced detect and avoid capabilities, drone authorization and authentication, plus RAN and QoS optimizations for drone operations with network slicing.

We will introduce testbed and results from initial experimentation efforts performed by the consortium, and share landmark opportunities created through the upcoming launch of the first MITRE Engenuity Open Generation 5G aviation range, planned on a US FAA range that provides private and commercial 5G networks, long-range flight paths, and a 100-square mile BVLOS experimentation hub.

Speaker: Dr. Leila Z. Ribeiro, Technology Director, Mitre Engenuity Open Generation

Bio: Prior to joining the Open Generation efforts Leila was MITRE’s Chief Engineer for the Aviation Concepts and Research division, which included Communications, Navigation, Surveillance and Spectrum aspects related to civil aviation. Leila is an experienced wireless communications engineer with a history of solving complex technical problems both for industry and government. As part of her work at MITRE, Leila has led several activities on multi-disciplinary concepts related to wireless networks design and optimization, spectrum engineering, satellite communications, aviation communications, navigation and surveillance systems, unmanned aircraft systems, and vehicular systems. With a solid understanding of U.S. spectrum policy and spectrum management, Leila has also served as a trusted advisor on some of the key questions currently being addressed by the government on spectrum management.
Prior to joining MITRE in 2009, Leila worked as Director of Systems Engineering at CelPlan Technologies, where she developed solutions for the design and optimization of wireless networks. She has also served as an adjunct professor in Satellite Communications at George Mason University and co-founded a non-profit organization to help promote cultural diversity and inclusion of the Brazilian culture. Leila holds a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech.
