Keynote 1: The Long & Winding Road to Next G

Abstract: This talk will provide a perspective on the long and winding road to the next generation of mobile networks (Next G or 6G).

From previous experience, we know it takes years to mature radical ideas into viable technologies that get further reduced to practice and become part of standards and designs and eventually commercial products. Working back from a rough target of 2030 for the start of the next G deployment, the time for research is now.

We can only paint a rough picture of where Next G is headed, but we can expect the trend towards better performance in customary metrics such as capacity, bit rate, latency, coverage, and energy efficiency to continue, as it has in previous G’s. The insatiable appetite for more spectrum will lead us towards ever higher frequencies. Ubiquitous coverage will push for the integration of non-terrestrial nodes into terrestrial networks. Trustworthiness will become an increasingly central feature, including aspects of confidentiality and service availability. Evolutions of current use cases, as well as new ones, will emerge, creating demand for Next G and shaping it.

The development of Next G may take place in a charged geopolitical climate among leading economic powers with technology, and telecom in particular in the spotlight. This climate creates many threats and opportunities. Whereas the ramp-up to 4G and 5G occurred under the foregone conclusion of a single global standard, Next G may face the dreaded standard and market fragmentation scenario. A major opportunity is increased funding for research, evidenced by the endless frontier act under discussion in Congress.

Speaker: Ali Khayrallah, Engineering Director, Ericsson Research

Bio: Ali Khayrallah has been with Ericsson in various research positions, presently in Santa Clara, CA, where he leads a team shaping future wireless technology, and earlier in Research Triangle Park, NC. His current focus is on 6G, and he has contributed to the development of 5G, 4G, 3G, Bluetooth, mobile satellite, etc. Previously, he was on the faculty of the University of Delaware. He received a Ph.D. and an M.S. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and a B.Eng. from the American University of Beirut. He holds 100+ patents and received the Ericsson inventor of the year award. Ali finds great purpose in taking basic research ideas and reducing them to practice. His personal research interest is in information theory and its application to wireless.

Keynote 2: Accelerating 6G Innovation

Speaker: Mark Pierpoint, Senior VP and President of Network Applications and Security, Keysight Technologies

Bio: Mark Pierpoint is senior vice president of Keysight Technologies, and president of Keysight's Ixia Solutions Group which provides network test and visibility solutions for validating, optimizing and securing networks. Before being named ISG President, Pierpoint served as vice president and general manager of the Internet Infrastructure business within the Communications Solutions Group at Keysight Technologies, where he was responsible for developing and delivering solutions across the commercial communications network from network access points to data centers and the cloud. Prior to this, he led Keysight's move in modular products, growing the business to over $150 million in FY15. Pierpoint joined the company in 1987, when it was still part of Hewlett-Packard. He has held multiple management positions in R&D, sales, marketing, and operations across various businesses within Hewlett Packard and Agilent Technologies in both the United States and Europe. Pierpoint holds a Ph.D. in Microwave Engineering, and a B.Sc. in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from the University of Leeds in the UK.
